What do diamonds look like before they’re cut?

Kitty! asked:

There are a ton of differently shaped and sized diamonds out there. My wedding band is composed of 16 small round diamonds and one large diamond right in the middle. I know that they aren’t just found perfectly shaped and sized, so what do they look like before they’re made into jewelry?

They look like dirty rocks. Normal rocks you’d see every day. That’s why they are so expensive, because it’s hard work to find them and clean-cut them. but they last forever and they’re beautifull!!

If you pick up a rock on the ground, a diamond will be similar in shape to that. Of course it’ll be a little more diamond-y, but it almost looks like quartz. Shaping up a diamond is a difficult process. You have to use either a laser or other diamonds to cut it. I think I saw on the History Channel that smaller diamonds are cut with a laser and bigger diamonds are cut by hand. They’re then polished to give them a great shine.
