How much does it cost to get a ring appraised?

Shawna asked:

My fiance bought my setting & diamond separately. If I was to go to a jewelry store, how much would they charge me to appraise it? And do you know if they would do it on the spot, or have to keep it for a while?

You can call around some jewelers do it for free, one of the places he bought either the setting or the diamond at may do it for free, or you should at the very least be able to get the separate appraisals from each place that he purchased from and then you can give the two separate ones to your insurance so you can add it as a rider on your policy in case anything were to happen to it. The places around here in Michigan usually don’t charge any more the $60 for an appraisal. Good Luck!!!

I paid $100 and it was done on the spot.

You want to find an appraiser who does not sell jewelry so that way they are not biased.

It’s best to have the diamond appraised while it is loose and not in it’s setting. You want the appraiser to be able to check the loose diamond against the diamond’s certificate.

Things like crown and pavillion angles and carat weight can’t be measured while the diamond is in the setting.

Once you have it appraised, you might want to consider the following 2 insurance companies:

    JewelersMutual.com

    or

    Chubb.com

    Good luck!

it usually depends on the jeweler. Some can do it right in the store, some have to send it away to have it done.
