Macro allows you to get very close to the object that you are taking a picture of. The other reason for a high end digital SLR is that the pictures will need to be of very good quality, and you will probably need a 10 megapixel camera or better for magazine photography. Magazines are usually printed at 1200 dpi, so more megapixels mean less grainyness when the picture is enlarged for print.
