Unless you're very familiar with diamonds, it can be very difficult to distinguish real diamonds from other gemstones. A diamond can look very similar, if not identical, to a cubic zirconia, moissanite or a zircon. So, unless you're able to get a certificate of authenticity, then it can be difficult to trust the buyer. But even with a certificate of authenticity, it can be difficult to ensure that the certificate itself is not forged.

Personally, if I was at a flea market and found a gorgeous ring from someone's grandma's basement (whatever) and I was really in love with it, I would buy it if the price reflected my love of it. I wouldn't buy it if the seller was charging in inflated price for the claimed diamond in the ring.

So I guess if it's a rare find and you're in love with the artifact, then purchase it if you'll love it even if it isn't a diamond.

If you are considering selling real diamond jewelry. I'd be wary from purchasing from anyone at a flea market selling authentic diamonds. The flea markets around here sell rubbish from grandma's basement and counterfit clothes. They certainly aren't somewhere for you to purchase an expensive diamond piece.

I usually go to flea markets seeking out old furniture, I probably wouldn't waste time going to a diamond stand there.

edit: we all saw that 'blood diamonds' film so get over the diamond hating. Not every diamond is from Africa/blood diamonds. My engagement ring has a Canadian diamond. Australia also produces diamonds. These diamonds are the same quality as any other diamonds.

Let me set up a booth and sell ya one. If you want quality then shop for things at a quality store. If you want cheaper stuff well the flea market is the place.
