how can you tell if a diamond is real or not? Without taking it to a jewelry store?

My mom gave me one of her grandma’s rings and, to me, it looks like a real diamond. Is there anyway to tell if it’s not? It’s not a big deal if it isn’t real. I would like to know though. Thanks!
I would say it’s about 1/4 caret round stone, somewhat cloudy. It’s raised up so you can see the whole thing.

Ok. well if the diamond is loose or unmounted you can place it over printing, as they refract so much light and dont act as magnifying glasses you wouldn’t be able to see any of the printing. They’re also good at conducting heat so breathe on the diamond and look immediately to see if it fogs up They’re normally also mounted in an ‘open back’ setting which means you can see around the rear of the diamond. 1st of all. how large is it. The smaller it is, the harder it is normally to tell. When you look into the stone, is it clear or is it cloudy. Can you see any white or bleck spots in the stone. No diamond is perfect. The white and black spots are what you call inclusions. They are spots of carbon that did not form completely. Also, most diamonds are not clear. They can be a cloudy white color or even have a yellow tint. If it looks close to perfect, it is probally not a real diamond. You can take it to a pawn shop or a jewelry strore and they will normally test it for free for you.

Well I’ve never been impressed with CZ (fake diamond). To me, they don’t have nearly the radiance or brilliance of a real diamond. At least the ones I see in the store really look different compared to the real diamonds. A real diamond will cut glass, but that could chip the stone. If it is a good CZ, you could have a hard time telling the difference. Just go to the mall’s major jewelry store and they will be glad to test it for you. It will take them one minute, they can also tell you the grade of the diamond.

There is no easy home test for a genuine diamond, but a trained eye can tell quickly. Take it to a jeweler - most of them will appraise your stone for free.
DON’T try cutting glass with it - you can damage the stone. Diamonds are very hard, but they are also brittle. Cutting glass with one can chip the corner of a facet, or in extreme cases, crack the stone.

There are a variety of ways to spot a real diamond. If the stone is not mounted, place the diamond on top of newspaper. Diamonds tend to reflect light, so if you can read the print chances are it’s a fake.
