I would ask this, what type of Diamond Jewelry are you looking to purchase?

Here are a few things to remember:

- The Four "C"s to diamonds:
(C)arat: The weight ( not the size ) of the stone(s)
(C)ut: Not necessarily the shape but how well the facets are along witht he symmetry and polish.
(C)olor: Most diamonds have a "yellow" tinge. Lack of this is what is called best color...goes on a scale from (D-Z) D being best.
(C)larity: The lack of presence of inclusions in the stone based on 10x magnification

These aspects are important in purchasing a solitaire. ( larger single stone diamond ring )

Pricing is based on the aspects mentioned above. But remember, they are all graded under 10x magnification. The Naked eye is a different story. This can save you a few dollars.
Also, "key weights" can drive up pricing. Example: a 1.00ct stone will demand a Much higher price than a stone that is .98ct, however visually, they will both look the same becasue it is weight...not size.

Beyond the 4 C's (Color, Cut, Clarity, Carat), look for verifiable certificates. There are GIA Certified Diamonds and AGS Certified Diamonds. A certificate is a "blueprint" of a diamond, it tells you the diamond's exact measurements and weight, as well as the details of its cut and quality.
